Introduction to the story

Fanta

High school student Ryang Jegal lives in Faeries' Landing, a perfectly normal town in Korea. In fact, pretty much everything in Ryang's life was normal, until the fateful day he met the strange deer-like creature Goodfellow and helped him escape from the police. As a reward, Goodfellow showed Ryang three faeries bathing in the local pool. They were discovered by the faeries, and in the confusion, one of the faeries' robes was torn, leaving a faerie stranded on earth and unable to ascend to Avalon. The faerie in question is the beautiful Fanta, who to Ryang's delight (and dismay) comes to live with him.

When reading Ryang's fortune, Fanta discovers that Ryang is to be the subject of 108 doomed relationships - out in the wider world, there are 108 girls who Ryang has an affinity with; but unfortunately, these affinities will manifest themselves as evil forces. Fanta, being the faerie of affinity, decides to help Ryang by destroying these evil affinities when they appear. However, neither of the pair are quite prepared for what is coming; firstly the arrival of Fanta's rival Medea, intent on causing trouble, then the interference of Fanta's brother Pain and even a visit from the King of Avalon himself. Various other heavenly (and not so heavenly) creatures also wait in the wings to cause trouble for the pair. Will Fanta succeed to destroy all 108 of Ryang's evil affinities, or will Ryang's love life quite literally kill him?

My thoughts

Fanta and Ryang

Faeries' Landing is one of the most popular manhwa releases to date, especially in the West. The influence of Korean culture (both popular and traditional) upon the story and its fresh, funny, modern style gives this series quite an edge.

This was the first manhwa I bought (at first not realising it was manhwa), and I'd say it's a must-read for anyone interested in Korean comics. Faeries Landing bases its plot on an Asian folk story, The Heavenly Maiden and the Woodcutter, which has been featured in several other manhwa, manga and anime series (most notably, Ayashi no Ceres).

Though infused with plenty of magic and supernatural events, this series is also very much about teenage life and its trials and problems; a theme which is brilliantly dealt with. Even though the story is this series' best feature, the art style is also fluid and attractive, and action scenes display a lot of finesse.

Where to find it

Manhwa

Faeries' Landing is an ongoing series in the West and is nearing completion. It is also by far the easiest manhwa series to find.

Anime

There is no Faeries' Landing anime as of yet. Interestingly however, there is a Faeries' Landing Game Boy game available in Korea.
