Self-styled queen of the school Yukino Miyazawa is Miss. Perfect - her grades
are top of the class, her manners are impeccable, her personality pleasant and
her looks unparalleled. However, away from the prying eyes of her classmates,
Yukino is a total slob, for whom life at school is a popularity contest (which
she is good at winning).
Things are about to change, however, when handsome new student Soichiro Arima
arrives and quickly moves to take her place as most popular student (and class
rep), seemingly without even trying - and he has also well and truly caught her
attention, too. This in itself annoys Yukino immensely, but in her attempt to
befriend Soichiro (for her reputation) she makes the fatal mistake of showing
him her true self. Much amused by this, he agrees not to tell anyone Yukino's
secret, if she does all his class rep work for him.
However, there may be more to Soichiro's motivations than being the most
popular, as Yukino is about to find out... what will happen when Yukino and
Soichiro discover that they're not really all that different?

Kare Kano (full name: Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyou, His and Her
Circumstances) is a sweet shoujo
love story, and even from the beginning of the story it's more or less obvious
how it will end. For this reason I hadn't picked up the series before now, but I
thought I'd give it a chance and I'm glad I did. It might be predictable, but
this manga has a lot of things going for it - the artwork is sweet, detailed and
fluid, the characters are believable and endearing and the story is pleasing and
realistic. As a whole, all these elements come together to make a very wholesome
and worthwhile series to follow, especially if you're into shoujo manga.

Manga
Kare Kano is a reasonably long series, at 21 volumes. All of it has been
translated into English by Tokyopop.
Anime
There is also a Kare Kano 26-episode anime series, entitled His and
Her Circumstances. This has been released in an absolute plethora of
different languages, so you shouldn't have a hard time getting hold of this
series. The art style is not too different from the manga either, which is good.
