As the rain drips down the window
And the sun goes behind a cloud
The world seems full but totally empty
The city is enveloped in a shroud
The glass steams up with my breath
And I study the scene outside
People rush by, anxious to get home
From the cold they want to hide
I lift my head as we're moving again
And the shops are flashing by
The Christmas lights shine red, white and green
The shop displays urge us to buy, buy, buy
The bus stops again and I survey the queue
It seems really long; and they're all getting on
I begrudgingly move my bag onto my knees
And my little daydream is finally gone
I squash myself against the wall obligingly
As the people board and push their way past
I keep my head down so that I can keep my seat
And wonder how long the rain will last
The bus starts again and the doors close
And the noises of the city are all drowned out
The people are too tired to talk right now
And their minds are filled with suspicion and doubt
The doors open and I'm wide awake
The winds howl outside and forbid me to exit
But I step off the bus and brave the night
And home draws me nearer with it's welcoming light
I wrote this poem
when I was in sixth form. I had a free period so I was sitting in the common
room bored out of my mind - and I decided to write a poem. It's about my journey
home from St. Anthony's (the sixth form I went to) in late November. It's pretty
realistic as the Christmas lights in Sunderland are (or were, at least!) red,
white and green... and at the time they were advertising N'Sync's single, Bye
Bye Bye in the shop windows in Fawcett Street (notice the pun!).
