Aqua アクア

Hundreds of years
before the beginning of the events of ARIA, work began on the planet Mars, to
make the planet habitable by humans. It was terraformed and its ice caps were
melted to irrigate the dry earth. However, the sea level rose much higher than
expected, covering 90% of the planet with water. Thus, it is now affectionately
known as the 'Water Planet'.
When people first
began to colonise Aqua 150 years ago, they arrived in the area where the city of
Neo-Venezia now stands and were placed on the vast array of islands on the
planet's surface, according to their nationality on Earth. Due to this, these
islands still retain the distinctive cultural flavour of these countries.
A complex network of
underground pipes and floating islands in the sky control Aqua's gravity and
weather. The planet also has a year twice the length of Man-Home's, with 24
months and seasons which are also twice the length. Aqua's many islands, unspoilt
scenery and unpolluted seas attract many visitors from nearby Man-Home (Earth).
Thus, one of Aqua's most important industries is tourism. In particular, many
tourists flock to Neo-Venezia for its year-round festivals and especially to be
given gondola tours by the city's legendary undines.
